Ground Water VS. Pipe Pollutants

Note again unless stated otherwise all research will explored using the SWMM User manual.

We are planing on differentiate between contaminated ground and contaminate Pipes. Prior work has been done with contaminated conduits which is how we model pipes in SWMM.

  1. Check to see if we can or should measure pollutant in the pipe.
    1. In the Link module
      1. pollut_quality - Get Current Water Quality Values for a Link.
    2. SWMM documentation. Otherwise we can measure pollutants at the node level as a conduit is placed in between 2 nodes.
    3. inflow_quality - Get Current Inflow Water Quality Values for a Node.
  2. Ground water in swmm primarily effects the following INP files. We will not be doing this we will instead be using Buildup to model surface contamination.
    1. Aquifers
    2. Groundwater
    3. GWF (Ground flow expression)
    4. Make sure that in the options section that the Ground water IGNORE_GROUNDWATER is not set to yes.
      1. [AQUIFERS] groundwater aquifer parameters
      2. [GROUNDWATER] subcatchment groundwater parameters
      3. [GWF] groundwater flow expressions
    5. Does groundwater only work with an Aquifer? Yes this is why we will be using buildup instead of groundwater.
    6. There is a concentration in ground water for Pollutants. How does that work?
      1. The Groundwater Flow Editor dialog is invoked when the Groundwater property of a Subcatchment is being edited. There is no ground water in example 6 final or in Banklick so we will have to set that up for the networks.
  3. Modeling Using Buildup.
    1. We will be measuring the amount of buildup at the sensor locations.
      1. Runoff Quality continuity in the status report has the following values:
        1. Initial Buildup
        2. Surface Buildup
        3. Remaining Buildup
    2. Using PySWMM
      1. At the subcatchment Level we can do the following:
        1. Buildup - Get Pollutant Results for Surface Buildup on a Subcatchment.
        2. conc_ponded - Get Pollutant Results for Current Concentration of Pollutant in Ponded Water on a Subcatchment.
        3. pollut_quality - Get Current Pollutant Water Quality Results from Subcatchment Runoff.
        4. runoff_total_loading - Get Total Pollutant Loading from Subcatchment Runoff.

We are currently writing the pollutant quality for every node. This creates the Signals csv. For the contaminated pipes do we measure at the node or at the conduit.
